Hi all

Regarding Black-crowned Night-Herons in the Sligo Creek drainage, this year I first noted Black-crowned at the Wheaton Branch Stormwater Ponds on April 3rd (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13615497). The species has been present consistently since then, with a maximum so far of 6 (all in view simultaneously!) on May 22 (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S14208821). Last summer, the population peaked at 8 birds on August 4 and 5. Seems odd these birds are showing no evidence of breeding (not yet, anyway!).

Despite the proximity of the Sligo Creek breeding pairs, I only rarely see Yellow-crowned Night-Herons at the ponds - in fact, only twice this year so far, on March 23 and another adult today, which flew in from the direction of Sligo Creek, and flew off back in that direction later.

The highlight of today's visit, however, was a Rosy-faced Lovebird, apparently enjoying a life of liberty in the suburban jungle (couple of photos herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/chlorophonia/)!!!

Cheers

Stephen

When Barry and I were doing the last breeding bird atlas, the Wheaton stormwater ponds (off Dennis Ave.) were in one of our blocks. We had Black-crowned Night Herons there regularly during the summer. Adults and juveniles, although to my knowledge they do not breed anywhere in the area. Interestingly, despite their breeding on Sligo Creek, we rarely saw Yellow-crowns there.

Totally unexpected for me, too, Rob! Last saw one in Sligo more than 10 years ago, I think.
