A. Vaughn Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on Saturday, January 8th. (As an aside, I saw the bird there January 2nd, with the Carroll County Bird Club, not previously posted.) To restate the directions: From Girdletree, proceed south on Rt. 12. After about 0.8 miles, on the left (east) side of the road will be a sign for the WMA and a dirt road. Turn left, and take the dirt road to its end at a small parking lot. Park here. Walk through the gate, and go straight (east), ignoring the side road/trail that goes off immediately to the left. After maybe 10 minutes, another side road goes off to the left, ignore this also and keep straight. (The thicket area to the left, north, after the latter intersection is very birdy). In a few minutes, you will be surrounded by fields on both sides of the road. In the distance, on the right (south) you will see two telephone poles. There is a hedgerow between the telephone poles (west hedgerow), and a second hedgerow a little distance farther east (east hedgerow). The bird likes to feed near the base of the hedgerows and perch fairly conspicuous in them. Jim Stasz first found on 12/27 near north end of the west hedgerow. It was observed later that day at the north end of the east hedgerow. On both 12/28 and 01/02 I observed it on the southeast side of the east hedgerow. Mary Ann and Dave had it on the west hedgerow. P.S. Mary Ann advises it was number 300 in Worcester for her! Congratulations. She can now consider herself a real birder! :) Good luck!
