It is a limited-access area. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is not to be confused with Patuxent River Park on the Prince Georges County side of the Patuxent River south of Upper Marlboro. JBWS is located on the Anne Arundel County side of the river. It is a part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. In my opinion, it is one of the best kept secrets on the Patuxent River! There is a new interactive display area dealing with wetlands ecology in the McCann Wetland Study Center, and lots of trails. JBWS has active educational and research components, manned by a small staff, aided by volunteers (Charlie is one of the naturalists on the staff, and coordinates volunteer activities). Volunteers are active not only in bird studies (by-weekly waterfowl censuses on Tuesday mornings during the winter, MAPS studies, migratory banding, Saw Whet banding, etc.), but also in on-going studies dealing with herps, turtles, fish, botany, water quality, and others; if you are interested in volunteer activities, give Charlie a call.
