Merkle had a good amount of activity, but mostly common stuff. 2 Ring-necked Ducks on the Frog Pond were my first of the year. About 15 Wigeon, more Pintails, 6 Gadwall and more Mallards and Blacks were on Windmill Pond. Couldn't find Rusty Blackbirds at either of the 2 normal places (CADT bridge and river pier). Nor could I find any of the Soras that Greg Kearns says are still around (radio collars make the job easier for him). The eagles were not around their nest. Unfortunately the sanctuary has run out of birdseed, and I don't know when they'll get more, which means finding White-crowned Sparrows will be a challenge. None were at the VC, and I only found one out on the CADT. My favorite sparrow field had several hundred again, but was missing Chipping and the potential Vesper I had before - this time it had Tree, Field, Savannah, White-throated, Song and Junco. Couldn't find obvious white-wash or pellets in the more obvious and accessible owl spots, including the spot where a Long-eared was found 4-5 years ago. On the way home I saw an interesting Red-breasted Hawk. The tail stripes were not very distinguishable, which would have led me to think immature, but the breast was totally awash in rust, which seems like adult. Maybe the tail recently molted? Good birding, Charlie ===== **************************************** Charlie Muise, Naturalist Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Maryland, USA "The English country gentleman galloping after a fox - the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable" (Oscar Wilde) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
