Beach- Jan. 22(23) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dear Seabirders, EVEN IF YOU ARE ALREADY ENROLLED FOR A WINTER PELAGIC TRIP, PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY AND PASS IT ALONG TO INTERESTED PARTIES. While our pelagic trips from Virginia Beach on Jan. 29(30) and Feb. 12(13) are full, we still need a few more participants to keep from running This Weekend's trip at a loss. I haven't been offshore for a week and a half now, but on Jan. 9 I saw at least 200 kittiwakes, 250 Red Phalaropes, and one Great Skua while fishing for sea bass 50-60 miles off Virginia Beach. We probably would have seen even more if we had been traversing more ocean during daylight hours. With all of the north wind that we've had for the last several days, This weekend I'm hoping for an influx of more northern seabirds like fulmars, Dovekies, Razorbills, and puffins. Because the other trips are already full, this might be your only chance to get offshore from Viginia this year. Depnding on the outcome of the next couple of weekends, THERE IS A CHANCE that we might run two boats on Feb. 12(13), but I wouldn't count on it. There is also always a chance that the weather won't be fit to go offshore in then either. So if you've been thinking about a winter pelagic from Virginia and you can get away THIS WEEKEND- Jan. 22(23), here's your chance! If you can't get away this weekend, and you are able to drive to the Outer Banks on Feb. 5(6) or Feb. 19(20), we have trips aboard the Miss Hatteras (a great boat for winter trips) going out from Oregon Inlet (Wanchese) and Hatteras respectively on those weekends. The Outer Banks trips are great because you don't have to go as far offshore to see the same stuff that we see on the Virginia Beach trips- you just have to drive a couple of more hours in the car. Because the birds are closer to shore, there's also a better chance of running the trips in less than perfect weather. Since we began running trips off Cape Hatteras in winter, we've seen Great Skuas on most of them. I hope that some of you reading this will be able to join us offshore on these winter pelagic trips. These trips are all scheduled for Saturdays with Sundays held as an obligatory weather date. The fee for each winter trip this year is $85 per person and it seems likely that this will increase next year if fuel prices stay high. EVEN IF YOU'VE ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR A TRIP LATER THIS WINTER, you might want to try going this weekend if the weather looks decent (too early to tell quite yet) because with winter weather you'd better get it while you can. If you interested in any of these trips please contact me ASAP via e-mail or by phone at (252)986-1363. I'll be leaving Hatteras for Va. Beach Friday morning and will be away from e-mail then, but I will be able to check telephone messages. It seems likely that latecomers can show up at the dock on Saturday morning with cash in hand and be able to get a spot, but a call could save you an early morning trip in the case of inclement weather. Information about these winter trips and spring and summer trips from the Outer Banks can be found at our site on the Web- http://www.patteson.com/ I hope to see many of you over the next several weekends.
