Six or seven years ago a smaller (20') sweet gum under them died. Much to my wife's, mother's and neighbor's disbelief I have left the snag standing. We were rewarded this morning. A male Pileated Woodpecker spend almost two hours excavating several huge holes in it, not 40 ft from our kitchen window. Even got the scope out for the kids.
