Yesterday Marshall Iliff and I went out in search of an unusual gull that's been seen here a couple times. We did not find the bird, but in the several thousand gulls that were here (a higher Herring:RIng-billed ratio than I am used to) we did locate 2 adult Lesser Black-backed. After I returned to work Marshall came back a reported a 1st-winter Thayers Gull. Some clarification on the gull initially being sought. Danny Bystrak reported a Black-headed to me on the 8th. On the 9th Stan Arnold, Lynette Fullerton and I found what we assumed to be the same bird. Talking with Danny later, we realized we had _2_ different birds. Danny's was an immature, with yellow-based bill. Ours was an adult with all-red bill and legs. Ours had _NO_ black on the head. Danny later found this bird on about the 15th, and agreed it is an adult with no black. So the question: is it simply a Black-headed with no ear spot? Or is it something else? In my look through Harrison, I found 2 birds that could fit the description, but both are old world, and both would likely be escapes. Any ideas? Rick? Gene? Anyone?
