When I went out to refill the feeders about an hour ago, there was 6.5 inches of snow on the drive and it's been falling steadily since. Here are some of the more interesting birds I have seen today: A mature male Coopers Hawk A mature female Sharp-shinned Hawk (neither one has caught anything yet) A female Purple Finch with no tail feathers. She sits in the tree over the bird feeder and closes her eyes for a few seconds and then looks around. She also appears to be breathing rapidly. She may have suffered additional injuries when she lost her tail, but she can fly and appears alert. A female Purple Finch eating snow off tree branches - a quite a lot of it, too. A lone female Red-winged Blackbird with a solid yellow chin. In the throat area, the yellow has some dark streaks which merge to all streaks and no yellow on the breast. So far, only one House Finch, a male. I guess the conjunctivitis really took a toll on the species.
