This one has a special uniqueness... 2 years ago a pair of eagles took over, and greatly expanded, one of the nests when their nest-tree collapsed. I expected the Herons to move, but they didn't - except, presumably, the former occupants of the nest the eagles took over! It is interesting to look at the three large trees upon which most of the nests are built, and see that one nest is FAR bigger. It's on the Critical Area Drive Tour (CADT) that runs from Patuxent River Park to Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary (A vastly under-birded spot, IMHO). The CADT is open to walkers and bikers on Saturdays, to drivers on Sundays. Sorry I don't have my DeLorma with me, but Patuxent River Park is off Croom Road, south of Upper Marlboro. BTW, it was on the CADT that I had Tree, Chipping, Song, White-throated, White-crowned, Field, and Swamp Sparrows, in addition to Junco, and Towhee on the Christmas Bird Count - 9 sparrows ain't bad in one place. The Mid-winter count revealed all but the Chippys.
