For me, one of the most interesting finds of the day was the circle of northern shovelers at West Ocean City pond. It was a little out of seaso= n for them, I suppose. But even more interesting was their habit of swimmi= ng aggressively around and around in a circle, their heads down in the water. More than a dozen males and females were joining the shoveling party, and= I saw two additional birds join the circle as I watched. I assume that the birds were taking part in some kind of communual feeding strategy, but I have never observed this before. (I've not even *heard* of this behavior= in shovelers before.) Anyone out there familiar with this behavior? >From: Leslie Roslund >Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding >To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM >Subject: [MDOSPREY] Talbot County Chapter Visited Ocean City and Indian > River Inlet >Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2000 21:23:58 -0500 > > The Talbot County Chapter of MOS birded several Ocean City sites an= d >later checked out Indian River Inlet, with the following results: > > Approx 75 Species total; highlighted by : > Harlequin Ducks (OC) 5 - at the west end of the jetty, >beside >the motel > Purple Sandpipers (OC) > Bonaparte's Gulls (OC) > All three of the possible Merganser Species - Several Hooded an= d >one >F Common in the West Ocean City ponds; Red-breasted at the OC Jetty > Immature Black-crowned Night Heron - Indian River Inlet > Adult Glaucous Gull - resting on the ice of the Indian River In= let >pond between the Marina and Route 1.
