I put the entire tripod in my duffle bag diagonally (so it will fit) and "wrap" it with a couple of pairs of jeans. I then pack the rest of my clothes in and around the wrapped tripod. This protects the tripod and has worked very well on many trips. As far as the scope, I place it in the case and carry on board. This way, it is with me at all times and is safely handled and transported. I like to place the scope under the seat in front of me as opposed to putting in an overhead bin. Good luck on your trip.
