We saw the Tufted Duck today from the Mt. Vernon Pwky, from the overlook just north of the "Mt. Vernon View Dr." sign. We had searched the river form the sailing marina downstream to this point, and arrived to find Bob Augustine looking at the bird. (Thanks Bob!) It was about 200 yards out with Lesser Scaup, at that time resting, but soon began to swim and dive. It steadily moved shoreward into the cove just north of the overlook, and south of the Ft. Hunt exit. Good views could probably have been achieved from this point, which requires a short walk upstream, but (again) we were trying to beat rush hour. Btw, Bob found the bird around 3 pm and we left it at about 4 pm. Besides the thousands of Lesser Scaup, there was a smattering of Greaters, as well as Redheads, Canvasbacks, a few Ringnecks, Ruddies, Common and Hooded Mergs, Blacks, and Mallards. We saw two adult pairs of Bald Eagles perched side-by-side along the river. Oh yes, the two Tundra Swans were still present upstream of Sheridan Pt.
