We did a Calvert County trip yesterday, 2/13. Started at the Jefferson Bridge, hit Jefferson Patterson Park, Battle Creek, Flag Ponds, Chesapeake Beach and some back roads. Low light: Didn't get Brown-headed Nuthatches at Camp Conoy Road, where I had them on the midwinter count. Greg thought he MIGHT have heard one, but wasn't sure. It was pretty dead there by the afternoon when we arrived. Highlights: 1) Two Peregrines on the Jefferson Bridge. Saw them copulate twice. I saw one near miss attempt on the coots at first light. Very interesting to see 50+ coots running on water, hitting each other, etc. 2) 31 Redheads at Jefferson bridge. An additional 50+ on the east side of Solomon's Island. Where were they on the Pax River count? Sorry Sue! My first (15) turkeys of the year, right in a field off route 2-4. (-2?) Here is the list. With the exception of Gannet and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, we both saw/heard every bird.
