Best bird of the day was a woodcock. We were creeping slowly along a muddy lane in the car when it occurred to me that the rufous coloured lump in direct line with the car tires was not mud; I hollered WOODCOCK, just in time. I imagine we came to a stop not more than a fraction of an inch from the bird. It was quite obvious that it imagined itself invisible and was not about to move. We backed up and the bird began doing what can best be described as a whole body bob and continued this motion as it inched its` way up a small snow covered incline. We sat and watched for over 5 min. as it performed these hilarious looking movements, and turned on the radio at one point to give it accompaniment; the song that came on was " I Just Wanna Fly! " Sean recorded the entire performance on his digital camera. Priceless!! Probably the best look I`ll ever get at a woodcock. Other birds of interest were PURPLE FINCH, PIPIT, HORNED LARK, FOX, FIELD, TREE , WHITE-CROWNED & WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HERMIT THRUSH and a wintering CAT BIRD.
