North; Feb. 23 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Quick Wednesday a.m. trip to OC and points north yielded the following highlights: West OC Pond: One drake redhead with hundreds of canvasbacks OC Jetty: Three drake harlequin ducks at seawall and later close-in by adjacent hotel pilings. Only a pair of surf scoters and one flock of 8-10 oldsquaw. About 20 Bonaparte's gulls and about 15 red-throated loons and 8 commons. Sev. each of purple sandpiper and ruddy turnstone. No peregrine seen on any of the water towers. Spring Lake Community: Female tufted duck in loose company with shovelers and ring-necked ducks. An all dark bird with a broad bluish bill. Unlike pictures in most of my books, the black tip and rest of the bill are separated by a whitish band (like ringnecks have). She has a small but distinctive topknot. Cape Henlopen: Visitor center feeders drew in red-breasted and brown-headed nuthatches and one fox sparrow.
