For years it has been documented that a bunch of gulls come here from somewhere east every morning, hang out a bit, and leave going north-west. Then in the afternoon, a bunch of gulls come from the north-west, hang out a bit, and head out east. We had some assumpt - er, educated guesses: - it was roughly the same group - in the morning, they came from roosting on the Chesapeake Bay - in the afternoon, they came from the Browns Station Landfill. - they left here heading approximately due east, and went straight for the bay. Yesterday, under the lead of Lora Wondolowski, and grad student doing her thesis on gulls here, we pursued the gulls. When they left, we hopped in my car and sped- um, drove safely - east on route 258. We took several different routes in trying to pinpoint where the majority of the flock went, and we noted some north-south dispersal, as we'd expected. The closer to the water we got, the more dispersed they got. In fact, there was NO dispersal west of route 2. In the end, the bulk of gulls leaving here flew almost due east, basically above 258 the whole way, and hit water right about Broadwater Point, which lied between Broadwater Creek and Carrs Creek. Next time there's a rare gull at Jug Bay, this area might also be worth a check. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of public access land there. While we were at the point, we saw over 100 Tundra Swans, and noted a house at the point with VERY active feeders. Many blackbirds, finches, and the usual feeder birds.
