Common Grackles were everywhere I went. I left Conowingo ~ 11 am on Saturday (see Genes posting) and hit Havre de Grace, and Charlestown (Cecil County). Then I continued down Rt 213 South through Kent County. The best stop was at a little pond on Rt 213 about a 1/4 mile West of Rt 301. I had: 12 or more Mallards 14 American Wigeon 12 GW Teal 12 Pintail All of this was in a field with about 200 Ring-billed Gulls and some Killdeer There is a smallish pond here that I am not sure will be here when the rain dries up. Another good pond is on Rt 213 in Queen Anne's County. This is a farm pond just South (or is it East) of Rt 301. I had both Scaup (oddly enough) in here along with Gadwall, Green Winged Teal, Pintails, Wigeon, Ring-necked Ducks and some Mallards. Driving to Assateague (where my plans to band owls were thwarted) yeilded a few good birds at the visitor's center (Quail and Great-horned owls calling, and a Cooper's Hawk). Sunday I had Snipe, Savannah Sparrows, 4 Fox Sparrows, 2 Towhees and a Phoebe at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. I tried Seneca Creek SP finding only RN Ducks and Bufflehead. I had a Red-breasted Merganser along with about 290 RN Ducks, 165 Coots, Bufflehead and 3 Lesser Scaup at Black Hill Regional Park (I think someone posted about this recently ... thanks). Later Sunday I had a Chipping Sparrow at the birdfeeder in Frostburg (my girlfriends house) and this morning there was a Fox Sparrow at the feeder. Both are good signs of Spring.
