Many years ago a friend and I stopped there on the way home from the MOS convention in Frostburg. It was my first "real" birding weekend. We spent the afternoon there and had a magical afternoon enjoying the lovely weather and great birds(not that I could identify them but what a trifling thing when I had discovered warblers!) At dusk we found ourselves by a small pond and could start to hear in the distance, those plaintive notes - Whip-or-will, Whip-or-will. First one and then many, until there were dozens calling all around us. Closer and louder the calling birds increased as we sat in the twilight by the pond. Suddenly we were in the midst of dozens of birds as they swooped and dove over the pond in their search for insects. They sometimes came so close I could feel the sweep of their wings against my face. We stayed until after dark utterly transfixed! I will always remember that evening by the pond with such joy in my heart, for the beauty of the Whip-or-will and the discovery of birds.
