First stop around noon ... the Frederick County pond at Rt 17, south of Burkittsville (Blair ... which?): Ruddy Ducks ~6 Ringed-neck Ducks ~10 Tundra Swans ~6 Canada Geese + Mallards + Then into Washington County ... Pleasantville, Potomac River at Lock 34 on the C&O Canal: American Black Duck ~10 [close-out!] Greater Black-backed Gull 2 Common Mergs ~5 Back Rd Eastern Phoebe 1 Nothing else cooking along the river ... Waste treatment Plant at Boonesboro appeared that it might not be operating (?). Chain on the road, no sounds of bird activity. Pond at Beaver Creek, Black Rock Road and Rt 66: Green-winged Teal a pair Funkstown WWTP - nothing except Geese Pond in the City Park in Hagerstown (thanks, Bob Ringler!) Mute Swan (for all you County listers) Indian Springs WMA at Blairs Valley: Not a thing !!! (except for two Mallards) [Has anyone every had good h2o fowl here? I've never had any luck.] Big Pool at Fort Frederick State Park. Walked all the way to the end (2 miles each way): On the walk down ... Wood Ducks 2 flybys Canada Geese beaucoup American Coot 2 Canvassback 2 Herring Gull 3 - stopped only briefly to bathe Red-breasted Mergs several Common Mergs 2 American Black Duck 2 Wild Turkey 1 talking a stroll on the path ahead of me On the walk back ... at dusk (about 6:15pm, ducks started dropping from the sky) just above mile marker 113: Wood Ducks 4 Common Mergs ~30 Hooded Mergs ~10 Lesser Scaup ~15 Tundra Swan 1 and in the fading light in the fields on the west side of the pond ... American Woodcock ~3 displaying And ... most importantly ... I got to eat each both lunch and dinner at Roy Rogers !!! (Seriously). One of the benefits of birding in western and southern MD ... since all the ones in the DC area are closed or closing. Doesn't take much to make me happy, eh? So, Washington County waterfowl hole remain (in order) ... Bufflehead, Gadwall, Ruddy Ducks, Common Goldeneye, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Redhead, Common Loon, Snow Goose, Northern Shoveler, Surf Scoter, Oldsquaw.
