That's one of the major reasons Febraury and early March are the best time here to look for them- there are more of them and they are calling from areas where they do not normally nest. Once the snow cover is gone and the ground is somewhat soft you can usually find displaying woodcocks on the first warm night in February. Also I remember finding one calling in late December on the Ft. Belvior Christmas count in 1971. Just as a sidenote, as far as I know, Common Snipe which have a similar display to the woodcock don't do it on migration .
