It was in a very small opening surrounded by forest at Mason Neck NWR. There was light snow on the ground! These were probable winter residents or even migrants. The Birder's Handbook (Erlich, Dobkin & Wheye, p.140) says, "Male begins advertising flight when still on wintering ground." (A couple other books say this happens in southern states, so we probably don't see it here.) This is from the Stokes Guide to Bird Behavior, Vol. 3, p. 59: "Display-flights continue well into the summer, long after the females have finished mating and are involved with raising broods. These later flights may be those of juvenile males rather than adults. The flights may also start early in the year and sometimes occur even while males are on migration in the spring. Some flights also occur in fall." Andy Rabin Gaithersburg, MD andyrab@wam.umd.edu ----- I have a question re: the woodcock displays for anyone(s) out there who might answer. If the woodcocks are doing their displays and are peenting at a certain spot, does that mean that they will nest and breed at or near that location; or, is it possible that they are still migrating and are just displaying along their migration route?? Thanks for any info. regarding this activity. ------ ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
