On Tuesday morning, March 7, Lydia Schindler (who was preparing the Voice of the Naturalist) consulted with me about a Garganey report from Washington Channel, seen from Fort McNair, on Saturday, March 4. That afternoon, I talked with the observer, a Mr. Cwiklinski, and he supplemented the information Lydia had given me. He described a prominent, white eye line about three inches long going back from the eye; a "very dark" head and neck; a short "blunt white notch under the neck, about two inches" in length, by which I think he meant the white area at the front of the flanks; zig-zag white stripes on the back similar to those on a Wood Duck [the tertials in disarray in the wind], white below [the belly?] "when it bobbed" in the water; and a green patch "on the back" near the tail [the speculum]. He said the bird was with scaup [I presume Lessers] and it was close to the same size or maybe a little smaller than these scaup. He was as close as about 300 feet, although the bird was farther away, and looked at the bird through a Kowa scope. I can't remember what time of day he saw the bird on Saturday; he went back to Fort McNair, the sight of his initial observation, on Monday (afternoon?) and didn't see this bird, and he may not have seen any ducks. He also went out Tuesday afternoon and didn't see this bird. I apologize for not posting sooner, and if I remember details of my conversation incorrectly. Best, Rob Hilton robert@csa.com _____________________________________________________ Sent by Jahoopa Free Email!
