It allowed us to pass and even permitted me to "light him up" with a red-filtered spotlight from about 20 feet away. We watched him "bob" his tail and walk around for about 5 minutes and then left him to own devices. This was in Davidsonville, MD. Funny, about 3-4 years ago, just about the same time of year, we spotted a woodcock while getting out of our car, in the evening, at Barbara's mother's home in suburban Calverton (Beltsville), MD.
