The best technique to separate these forms is by their vocalizations. Michael O'Brien of the MD/DC Records Committee has analyzed recordings of Red Crossbills made during the 1998 invasion to determine the forms/subspecies involved in anticipation of potential splits. We believe that additional recordings were made by other observers during that winter. If you have such recordings, especially from the Eastern Shore or Western Maryland, please contact him. I have included his e-mail address on this message. Also, if you have the occasion to make recordings anytime in the future, please let him know. For additional information, visit Jeff Groth's great web site, "A Guide to the Red Crossbills" (including recordings and sonograms) at: http://research.amnh.org/ornithology/crossbills/ Thanks.
