Birders thinking about a trip to this area should be aware of the following situation: Eastern Baltimore County residents are absolutely terrified of Edward Palcynski, a local resident accused of four killings last week (also, a carjacking and various other crimes). Palcynski, described as a very good outdoorsman, is suspected to be hiding in one of the wooded areas near the Bay. On Sunday and Monday, police thoroughly searched the Dundee Creek/Hammerman area of Gunpowder Falls State Park, but found only some bedding in the woods. Incidentally, I go birding in this area a few times a year, generally in the colder months. My last visit was in February. The center of the search is a few miles north of the Back River sewage treatment plant. Nevertheless, many Baltimore birders are staying away from all Eastern Baltimore County spots until Palcynski is caught.
