I thought it might be a purple finch, but it flew away before I could get a good enough look at it. This morning it cooperatively stayed on the feeder about 5 feet from the window so I got a good long, close look. It was indeed a purple finch. On our walk yesterday my husband and I also finally got to see the horned grebe that's on Wilde Lake, as well as the pied-billed grebe and the double crested cormorant that were still there. In the path along the stream that feeds the lake we got very good look at a pileated woodpecker, and a black vulture sat on a tree branch just overhead long enough for us to not only study it ourselves, but also to share the binoculars with a couple of interested passersby. (Note to John - I'm still not sure if that's what we saw earlier, but we got a good look at it after you left -- it was over at the east end of the lake, near the boat dock.) Along with the usual cardinals, titmice, mallards, etc., etc., we saw 20 species yesterday. It was a pretty exciting day for a couple of beginning birders!
