It started with White-throats calling predawn, next Juncos were in feeding, followed by two Fox Sparrows in the shrubs, next a singing male Eastern Towhee, followed by a single Song Sparrow scratching in the grass, and by noon two Chipping Sparrow munching on sunflowers seeds. This is one short of the Big Day record of seven back in 96. Other birds of note today were an immature Bald Eagle heading south, a adult male Sharp-shinned Hawk, resident Canada Geese (they had no luggage), five species of woodpeckers including two male Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, a large flock of Common Grackles, Brown-headed Cowbirds, and a single Red-winged Blackbird. The usual suspects like White-breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Chickadee, T. Titmouse, Gold and House Finches were present in good numbers, also. I wonder if the Woodcock will display tonight. It is chilly. Maybe the Gannets are moving past Cobbs Island. I will check tomorrow and, if found, report back. Good birding.
