I arrived at about 4:40 p.m. today to find Wade Stephen (sp?) an= d Bud Taylor with the bird in the scope. It was fairly distant, closer to = the far side of the river, but still identifiable, and usually in the company= of a Common Loon in breeding plumage, making the size comparison simple. In addition to being noticably smaller, the Pacific had a uniformly dark hea= d, nape, and back (from our distance), and the chin strap was noticable when the bird turned in a favorable direction. Besides the loons, oher birds in the area were Bufflehead, Ruddy Ducks, Horned Grebe, cormorants, and Ospreys on every available nesting platform. By the way, I had not met Bud before, but when I get my next copy of Bird= ing magazine, I'll take note, because he's the one who painted the Hermit Thr= ush on the front cover.
