My puddle duck lis= t is quite short for Harford. In particular, a Green-winged Teal there woul= d put me only one county (St. Mary=92s) away from a close-out. I had notice= d Matt Hafner=92s postings about the Perryman pond and finally decided to c= heck it out. What a nice pond! It=92s a secluded, somewhat marshy pond in woods that y= ou can drive to. It is open to the public and is protected as a wildlife are= a by the Forest Green community association and the Harford Land Trust with county govt support. (There's a big sign about this on Forest Green Rd. -= - justifiable self-praise. We could sure use more of this everywhere.) It=92= s north of Bush River, just west of the south end of Perryman Rd (Rt 159). = It=92 s best viewed, as Matt had written, off Clubhouse Rd. which hangs west fr= om Perryman Rd. Here=92s what I saw: 68(!) Gadwall (a new county bird for me) 4 Wood Ducks 3 Pied-billed Grebes 2 L Scaup 1 immature Bald Eagle who temporarily scattered most of the flock and, oh yes, 2 Green-winged Teal - BONSAI! Incidentally, the broad flat fields along Perryman Rd looked VERY suitabl= e for field birds and raptors, with little traffic. I didn=92t give it much= of a try today though due to the high wind. I note Matt Haffner and Rick Blom have referred to this as good for raptors in some previous posts. I also checked the marshy area at the NW corner of Rt 40 and Rt 24. It ha= d 11 Ring-necked Ducks. I also discovered Swan Harbor Park off Oakington Rd, a beautiful old farm and mansion overlooking the bay. But, alas, =93=D6d und leer das Meer.=94= (Extra credit if you know who said that, and whether I spelled it right. I.e., = as usual, the open waters of the upper Bay were devoid of any waterfowl.) I also went up to Havre de Grace (Coots and Mallards only) and Conowingo (N= o waterfowl at all on the Harford side.) Any other suggestions of where to look for waterfowl in Harford Co would = be welcome. I still have quite a few gaps. A Greater Yellowlegs would really hit the spot also, since it would be a close-out. Thank you very much, Matt, for informing us about this nice pond.
