The Rough-winged Swallows that nest along the bank of the Creek returned yesterday. One of the Bluebird boxes has 5 eggs this morning. Chipping Sparrows are singing and fighting and keep visiting the cedar trees as if nesting there. Yellow-throated and Pine Warblers are singing and Cedar Waxwings are eating blossoms from high in the trees. The Osprey are snagging sticks and old corn stalks from the fields and as many as 6 were ketteling together. A pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers is still hanging around, and I hope they will stay and nest. Winter residents like the Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, and Red-breasted Nuthatches are still around. It is a good time to hear the comparisons of Chipping Sparrow, Junco and Pine Warbler. I saw a small buteo land high in a tree this afternoon. I was busy helping students identify wildflowers and could not get a good look at it. It appeared to be smaller than a Red-shouldred Hawk. Is tis possible that it could have been a Broad-winged Hawk already?
