Had about 40 on the mudflats during lunch, along with Danny's Caspian Tern. Saw my first Purple Martin today. Bird song continues to increase, though I haven't heard any new species lately. Arriving about 10:30 the other night, I flushed a Barn Owl from the cedars by the intern house. Got shreiked at a couple times. Still trying to learn the differences in song between Junco, Pine Warbler and Chippy... In the non-feathered world, I found my first Worm Snake of the year today. Last week we had the first Queen's Water Snake, Black Racer, Cricket Frog, and 5-Lined Skink. Week before that were the first Spotted Turtle, Box Turtle, Black Rat and Garter Snakes. Looks like Wood Frogs are done breeding, and Spotted Salamanders are past peek. Red-backed Salamanders seem to be way up in numbers from last week, so I think they're getting more active. Don't forget we have a bird walk tomorrow, 8-11 a.m. Led by Gary Pendleton. Some chance for Yellow-throated Warbler. Enjoy spring.
