We did have good numbers of field, chipping, song, and three Savannah Sparrows. One Fox Sparrow briefly sang in the distance and a couple of Towhees were around. At Jug Bay, we located 37+ snipe and a single Lesser Yellowleg feeding near the parking area, down on the mud, a few Forster's Terns over the marsh, three Green-winged Teal, one Red-breasted Merganser, two Wood Ducks, three Black Ducks, and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher in a pear tree. OK , it was not a pear tree. On Saturday we stopped on the beltway over ramp that connects Indian Head Highway (Rt. 210) and 295 north to view the female Bald Eagle on her nest. The nest is to the south (on the left) of the ramp (about half way down) as you head toward the river. This nest is easily viewable until the leave fill out. (De Lorme p.37, A4). Also, on Saturday we had our first Great Egret of the year. It was flying on the north end of the Francis Scott Key Bridge near the tool booth. Fox Sparrows were still visiting my backyard as of Sunday. Saturday morning five Double-crested Cormorants flew over the house. Not bad for a forest interior bird. Last evening I had three Northern Rough-winged Swallows flying over the ponds at the mall in Waldorf. I had a single Horned Grebe there on Saturday morning. Good birding.
