Oh, an owl, I exclaimed. No, not quite the right shape, maybe a hawk. No, it wouldn't hang around and listen to us gabbing loudly for ten minutes. With my old eyes, I was unable to make the ID, and thought it might be nothing more than an old hornet nest. So I ran to the house for the binocs. Unbelievable as it might seem, there was an American Bittern! And I even got shots to prove it. I live in the middle of a large upland woods of oak, dogwood and maple. The closest marsh is along the canal two miles away.
