(Wou= ld you believe county-listing was involved?) At Lakeside Business Park (off Rt 24 east of I-95), which has some nice ponds, consciously set aside for wildlife: 1 Great Egret 2 Greater Yellowlegs (I=92ll be darned, a =93close-out=94 for me!) 10 Lesser Yellowlegs 2 Green-winged Teal (Believe it or not. They=92ve taken over Harford Co. = I bet they come to feeders now.) I Common Yellowthroat (my first of the season) At Harford Glen: 2 Green-winged Teal (Enough already!) 1 Greater Yellowlegs (ditto) 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Green Heron (my first of the season) Thank you Matt Hafner, Les Eastman, and Dave Webb (hope I didn't miss anybody) for your advice about waterfowl and shorebird spots in Harford C= o. I went on to Kent county in search of the ever-elusive Pileated Woodpecke= r, without success. Nothing too noteworthy in the county except my first-of-the- season N Parula and Ovenbird. Any advice on where to find Pileated Woodpeckers in Kent would be very welcome. Backtracking, on Saturday, 4/15/00, to escape the rain I headed west. At Lake Linganore, Fred Co: 1 Double-crested Cormorant (I=92ll be darned, another =93close-out=94 for= me!) Which freed me for some more leisurely birding in Washington Co: At Dam # 4 (and other locations down the Potomac river): 9+ Double-crested Cormorants 1 Great Blue Heron (kinda=92 hard to find in this county - at least for m= e) 9 Wood Ducks 1 Common Loon (at Dargan=92s Bend. The only one I think I've ever seen in water in this county) 1 White-eyed Vireo (my first of the season) 1 Louisiana Waterthrush 1 Hermit Thrush It was also a delight to my novice butterfly skills: The place was creepi= ng with zebra swallowtails (15+ -- my kind of easy-to-identify butterfly). A= lso saw 1 pipevine swallowtail, and 1 comma, not to mention lots of sulphurs = and cabbage whites. And, in the flower area, LOTS of pretty blue bells and st= ar=92 s-of-Bethlehem. I=92d like to check this pleasant area out at the height = of warbler season. There are more fairly placid expanses of water along the Potomac (i.e. places to look for waterfowl in this land-locked county next season) in t= his area than I previously realized. Unfortunately, I didn't bird the area by Harpers Ferry where the water is a lot faster. Since I didn't originally plan to go so far, I didn't realize until I got home that Phil Davis' county-record Great Black-backed Gulls were there.
