The dunlin is still there -- at about 2:00 it was in a cove in one of the small islands near the west end of the lake, best visible from the path on the north side just below the parking lot at the Centennial Lane entrance. The greater yellowlegs was in the same little cove. In the same general area we saw 3 blue-winged teals, a pied-billed grebe and a coot. In the woods on the south side there was a palm warbler, a common yellowthroat, several yellow-rumped warblers, and some goldfinches. Two eastern phoebes were in a tree at the extreme west end of the lake, near the bridge. An osprey circled overhead for awhile, then left. At the east (deep) end of the lake there were two common loons in breeding plumage, two more pied-bills and two ruddy ducks. Purple martins and barn swallows were busy near the concession dock. Plus of course all the usual suspects. This was a *very* good day for these two novice birders! We saw 28 species altogether that we positively identified, plus a few that we couldn't quite get (including a possible black-throated blue). Thank you Bonnie, Dave and Darius for posting about the dunlin -- it was so inconspicuous we might not even have spotted it if we didn't know it was there, and I doubt we'd have been able to positively ID it if we didn't already know what we were looking for.
