The two impoundments popular with shorebirds--Raymond Pool and Shearness Pool--are part of a several-year study to survey the populations of inverts eaten by the shorebirds. (Most refuges with impoundments in the mid-Atlantic coastal area are participating in the study, including Prime Hook. If you need more information, please let me know and I'll try to find out more details.) This year, the water level at Shearness Pool will be drained for shorebirds. Raymond Pool will serve as a control, and not be drained. Next year, it will be Raymond's turn, and Shearness will remain undrained. And so on. So if you visit Raymond later this month and next and wonder why the water level is so high, now you know. :-) Right now, water levels are quite high in both impoundments. Even tho' Shearness has already been drawn down, rain has been heavy in the past few weeks and more water has accumulated. The refuge plans to drain out more water in the near future in preparation for the arrival of shorebirds. I got all this info from Frank Smith, the refuge's helpful and paitent (with me!) biologist. :-) cheers, shireen ========================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ========================================================================= ===========================================================================
