Despite high winds and resulting 1-2 foot waves (and white caps!!!) that threatened to kill us on the Bay, we had a great paddle, and some killer looks at birds. Couldn't help but check one of Greg's Wood Duck nests. Had a hen in it (held her for a second) but no eggs or young. Tried to get to the heronry with the eagle nest on Mattaponi Creek, but the dang beavers have built a 3rd dam, and we just weren't up for going over all three. Did see one adult eagle leave the nest, though. Still surprised, 3 years later, that the herons continue there since the eagles usurped a nest! The Wood Duck continues in the Barn Owl box at the farm. Birds, from memory: Sorry it's not in true order. 2 Common Loons One little thing that was likely a Grebe of some flavor, but just one brief sighting. Caspian, Royal and Forster's Terns 40 Great Blue Herons, one GREEN HERON (my 1st of year) Ring-billed, Laughing, and one late HERRING Killdeer, Snipe, both Yellowlegs, Spotted Sand Mallard, Wood the only ducks Red-tailed, Red-shouldered, Cooper's, Kestrel, MERLIN Mourning Dove & Pigeon Barn, Tree, Rough-winged swallows; Martin, Swift. Previously had one each on several days. 2 beavers, one muskrat, one cottontail, deer, squirrels. A great day!
