(I've got some photos now, too.) I've even taken my 8-year-old son with me up close to the bird, and Mr. P is very mellow about it. He usually gives a very soft little chuckly noise when he's finished at the feeder and is about to leave. Interestingly, a second male Pileated has shown up recently. He looks younger -- feathers neat and black, not worn and rusty brown; crest very perky and bright red -- and he holds on directly to the suet feeder instead of craning his neck from the tree trunk like the other bird does. The new one, needless to say, flies away immediately if I so much as come to the window near the feeder. I wonder how much longer my friendly guy will keep visiting, and whether I'll see him again next winter? Although I've had Pileateds in my yard in the summer on occasion, I don't put out suet when the weather gets hot.
