A total of 43 species which is a new single day record for the small woods at the ridge. The previous record was last May at the same time, I think, with Elliot Kirschbaum and Greg Miller with 39 species. Unusual number of flycatchers with 30 birds. 1 Turkey Vulture - migrant NEE 1 Bald Eagle - 2nd, migrant NE 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 4 Mourning Dove 8 Chimney Swift 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 Great-crested Flycatcher 3 Least Flycatcher 3 Acadian Flycatcher 23 Empidonax flycatcher species - very high up in trees 1 Tree Swallow - flyby migrant N 3 Barn Swallow - flyby migrant N 8 Blue Jay - a flock of 8 headed NEE 4 American Crow 1 Fish Crow - heard 1 or 2 cah-like sound 2 Carolina Chickadee 2 Veery 1 Wood Thrush 2 American Robin 6 Gray Catbird 7 European Starling 1 White-eyed Vireo 8 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Northern Parula 6 Yellow Warbler - unusual high number 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler - female 2 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Black-throated Green Warbler 2 Black-and-white Warbler 2 Ovenbird 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Northern Cardinal 4 Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 2 pairs 4 Eastern Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 9 White-throated Sparrow 2 Common Grackle 1 Baltimore Oriole - male 2 House Finch 5 House Sparrow Will count on following days: May 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. Weekdays count at 8 or 9am and Sat count at 1pm after work and Sun count at 8 or 9am. Will need help to hear birds and need serious help to identify plants and trees.
