Scarpulla" Subject: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Today (Saturday, May 6, 2000) at Hart-Miller Island, I sighted an adult, probably male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (tail length ~ 6 - 7 inches). I observed it for approximately 45 seconds in flight over the north dike near the east corner. When I first noticed it, it was in flight approximately 25 feet in front of me. This is probably a "long-shot" chase bird since I never observed the bird perched anywhere. If it had been perched somewhere and performing feeding forays, I would feel more confident about the worth of chasing this bird. With all that said, if you are interested in chasing this bird on Sunday, May 7, here is the deal. The Maryland Environmental Service boat leaves the mainland at 7:00 am and stays at the island until 7:00 pm. Although this is the normal workshift, you will probably be able to leave the island somewhere between 3:00pm and 5:00 pm if they make a special run for whomever goes out. If you are interested in going to the island tomorrow, please call me at home (410-388-0852) tonight for details and to hold a spot on the boat (maximum 15 birders). Please note that birders are only allowed on the island on weekends, and that first-timers to the island must be accompanied by a birder who is familiar with the island.
