This a loop we do a few times each spring, essentially along the ridge (Tower Rd.) south of Rt. 77, and back along Catoctin Hollow/ Mink Farm Rds. The first interesting thing is that there was essentially no migration -- which is not to say that there were no birds. The breeding warblers and others seemed to be in in good numbers. One was never out of sound of an Ovenbird or a Redstart, for example. Our tally for about 4 hours driving and walking was: 15 Hooded Warblers, 3 Kentucky Warblers, 5-6 Cerulean Warblers, ca. 35 Redstarts, ca. 60 Ovenbirds, ca. 6 Louisiana Waterthrushes, 3 Black-throated Blue Warblers, 3 Black-throated Green Warblers, 6 Common Yellowthroats, 2-3 Black and White Warblers, 3 Wormeating Warblers, ca. 15 Scarlet Tanagers, ca. 50 Red-eyed Vireos, 8 Eastern Pewees, 3 Acadian Flycatchers, 4 Veerys, ca. 25 Wood Thrushes, 1 Broadwinged Hawk. NO Yellowrumped Warblers!!
