Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 08:05:34 EDT Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Gail Mackiernan Subject: Rock Creek birds Sorry for the belated report -- despite the heat and lethargy on the part= of both birders and birds, we did see quite a few migrants at Rock Creek Par= k, DC, yesterday (5/8). About 18 Warbler species: ca 100 Yellow-rumps (they = are finally leaving!), 4 Hooded, 4 Redstart, 6 B-T Blue, 6 B-T Green, 6 Ovenb= irds, 1 Blackburnian, 2 Chestnut-sided, 4 Magnolia, 6 Black-and-White, 1 Wormea= ting, 1 Northern Waterthrush, 2 Nashville, 2 Parula, 10 Blackpolls, 6 Canadas, = 2 Bay-breasted, 3 Yellowthroats. Many were playing hard-to-see and singing = in a very un-energetic fashion! Other migrants included Rosebreasted Grosbea= k (1), ca. 12 Scarlet tanagers, 3 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, 2 Acadian FCs, ca. 200 Cedar Waxwings, 2-3 Swainson's Thrushes and a probable Gray-cheeked (flig= ht views only). Late news from Sunday was that a singing Prothonotary Warbler was present= for some time on the ridge -- while relatively easy along the Potomac, this i= s a very rare species at Rock Creek and I think there have been only 1-2 ot= her records in the last decade! Unfortunately we missed it (being in Frederic= k Co.)
