Subject: May Count and...Cicada?

Hi all --

Barry and I did upper Sligo Creek Park (north of University Blvd.) for ou=
r
May Count -- a site I have counted for about 14 years now. It was, as on=
e
might have expected, hot and slow... There was very little evidence of
migration, and although species number (60) was equivalent to other years=
, the
numbers of individuals was down on the neotropical end. Nevertheless we s=
aw
14 species of warbler, the most numerous being Blackpoll (12), Yellowrump=
ed
(8) and Magnolia (4). Many birds were females -- Canada, Blackburnian, Pa=
rula,
for example -- and the males stopped singing early. There seemed to be a =
lot
of Veeries on territory and they were lovely to hear.

The most interesting observation was that of a 17-Year-type cicada. Now t=
he
last big irruption of these cicadas was 1987, and so this guy is either e=
arly
or one of a smaller brood (or a 13-year type, but I didn't know there wer=
e any
of this type in the DC area). I have lived next to this park since 1972 a=
nd
can't recall seeing this type of cicada except in 1987. Anyone have any
thoughts?

Cheers, Gail Mackiernan
