Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Arlene, Thanks for the interesting info on the periodical cicadas. For John's information, I have observed the cicadas in Silver Spring (Indian Spring neighborhood), probably well more than 30 judging from the number of skins on the foliage; and I found one skin on a telephone pole in Washington DC near 16th and Colorado, NW. Gail and others, This is actually a 17-year cicada that has emerged 4 years early. These = are Brood 10 cicadas which are experiencing what is known as a 4-year acceleration. There are theories as to why this occurs, but suffice it to say, in four more years the bulk of Brood 10 will emerge. Right now, observations over the last few days show a pattern of these cicadas emerging from Arlington and Alexandria as far east as Annapolis. This information was obtained from John Zyla, former naturalist at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, who is the local (and probably state-wide) cicada = expert. John would like to know the areas where this cicada is emerging, but doesn't have e-mail, so if anyone wants to privately e-mail me with this information, I can pass it on to him. He keeps track of the emergence of every Magiciada brood in the state of Maryland.
