Subject: LOSH nest on Lily Pons Road?

Hi folks,

I hope that Phil and Bob are listening, as I
don't know how important this is...

While leading an MOS trip to Oland road and Lily
Pons today, 5/21, we found at least one, possibly
2 Loggerhead Shrikes on Lily Pons Road. The
bird(s) were on the south side of the road,
perhaps 200 meters from route 85, in the same
area where I (and presumably others) saw one over
the winter. As one turns onto Lily Pons Road
from route 85, the location is on the right side,
and we viewed it from the relative high-point of
the roadside.

we never saw more than one bird, but there were
at least 3 occasions when the group saw a bird
flying one way out of sight, and suddenly it - or
another was seen perched in the opposite
direction.

Several times we saw the bird(s) land on a small
(2MX3M) man-made structure - possibly a well cap.
From there, it or they would fly into the small
clump of trees/shrubs to our left of the man-made
structure. We beleive, but are uncertain, that
these trips involved carrying material (food?)
into the trees. We believe this because the
trips generally followed what appeared to be
periods of insect-hunting on the ground.

Though we are uncertain that this indicates
breeding, I post it here because it is worth
checking out if anyone else happens to be in the
area.

It was a great trip! No Dickcissel, but we had a
number (12?) of Grasshopper Sparrows, a Willow
Flycatcher, lots of singing Meadowlarks, and
displaying Horned Larks. Green Herons seemed to
be everywhere at the nursery.

Between that and paddling the North Branch
yesterday, it's been a great birthday weekend!

Good day!
Charlie
