I was railing the marshes fro= m the railroad track, as I have done numerous times in the past, when the bird called four times. I was unable to elicit any additional responses with my tape, perhaps because the bird was some distance away and perhaps because of the awful road noise (always a problem at this site). This is the second record of Black Rail for Harford and my first, In addition, I had 12+ Virginia Rails, and one Sora. I also heard= a possible King Rail, but it was too far away to be certain and only called once. I have had King Rail at this location before. Several Harford birders are considering joining me in a late (ver= y late) Saturday night (weather permitting) effort to get the bird again. Anyone interested should e-mail me. The Black Rail was species number 287 for my Harford County list. Rick Never take a solemn oath.
