Any good places there/notable birds to see? Thanks a lot. >> Gee, I'd hate to go to San Antonio and not go further into the hill country, especially Lost Maples State Natural Area where the golden cheeked-warbler breeds (I'm estimating about 88 ? miles via 90 and 187 from San Antonio's 410) . Also, the black-capped vireo can be found by walking the trails around Neal's Lodges in Concan (about 77 ? miles from Rt. 410 via 90 and 127). There are probably good places closer to San Antonio, but these are the ones I would shoot for, depending on how much time you have. They say you can find these two birds in the Friedrich Wilderness Park just about 10 miles northwest on Rt. 10, but I haven't tried that. Take a look at Holt's "A Birder's Guide to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas" (see Edwards Plateau section) and Jerry Cooper's "Birdfinder: A Birder's Guide to Planning North American Trips," especially Day 8 in the Texas in Springtime chapter. I love Texas birding and would go back there in a heartbeat! (However, my last trip to Big Bend and then Brownsville in winter was a little disappointing because they had been in a draught for several years.) Let me know how you make out. Bea Nicholls Balto.
