My wife was sitting in the house when quite a racket started up and lasted for some time. She thought nothing of it since we live in the woods and various noises always occur. Later in the afternoon she went outside on our back porch only to find a 1 1/2 foot section of the railing on the porch in shreds. She thought that the only thing that could do this kind of work is a Pileated Woodpecker. Sure enough, there was a long tunnel made by a borer bee. A little later she heard the noise again and took a look. There was Woody making splinters out of the cedar railing. As a matter of fact, as I write this, the Pileated is back working away. The borer bees love the cedar for boring their holes. They go in perpendicular to the surface a short distance and turn at a right angle to continue the passage for at least another foot as the case is on our railing. And the holes are a perfectly round 1/2" diameter. Could have used a drill and come up with the same results. I have had Downys drill holes in the cedar siding of the house but nothing like this. Has any one else experienced this?
