The writer was obviously a bit confused about the bird banding lab and their procedures. Kathy Klimkiewicz responded to them directly and set them straight and she asked me to remind folks on MDOsprey about procedures for reporting found bird bands as well. It used to be that you would send the band, along with information about where found, condition of the bird, etc. to Bird Banding Lab, Laurel, MD. I assume this approach will still work but Kathy noted two other approaches that in this electronic age are much more immediate and satisfying. Kathy says "All band reports should be called in on our toll-free number -- 1-800-323-BAND or reported via our web site: (www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl)." So now you know that when the band says "Laurel, MD" on it, it DOES NOT mean the bird was banded there. Thanks for the information, Kathy!
