We have a delightful little reserve called Oare Marshes on the south bank of the River Thames estuary which is permanently open to the public, and where the voluntary wardens have to collect the syringes and condoms from around the visitors centre at the start of each day. What a sad bunch of people share our wonderful world! By the way, most of our reserves are permit free, with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds charging a small fee to non members. Our biggest problem at the moment is that many of the irreplaceable sites in the UK which are designates SSSI or Site of Special Scientific Interest have been desecrated by developers as SSSI does not give absolute protection. The UK is too full of people and development for such a small island, and we need to protect all we can. Can I just say how much I enjoy receiving MDOSPREY e mails and hearing all about birding in Maryland. I can't wait to get there in October! Civil liberties aside, it is probably a good idea. Parke. "J. B.
